Animal Health provides basic information on animal health and disease prevention. The responsibility for animal health rests first and foremost in the hands of the owner. The owner or caretaker of farm animals is usually the person who provides the basic husbandry that undergirds animal health and recognizes animal ill health and determines when to call for professional assistance.

Diagnosis and treatment of sick animals is the responsibility of the veterinarian. For the caretaker to compete with the veterinarian in diagnosis and treatment is economically unsound. Instead, the caretaker should cooperate with the veterinarian by providing the present and past history of the patient, herd, or flock. In some cases, the caretaker, under the direction and supervision of the veterinarian, will participate in the treatment and nursing care of convalescents. Thus, animal health is dependent upon a cooperative working relationship between the veterinarian and the owner. The aim of this book is to promote this relationship by preparing the caretaker to play an effective role in the prevention of disease in farm animals.

Animal Health is divided into four sections. Part One contains nine chapters that are basic components of a disease prevention program. It includes fundamental information on the nature of disease, nutrition, sanitation, disinfection immunization, quarantine, housing, hereditary abnormalities, and basic husbandry practices.

Part Two deals with the structure and function of the various systems of the animal body and with the signs of disturbances and diseases that affect the digestive, genitourinary, respiratory circulatory, and nervous systems. The cause, clinical signs, prevention, and treatment are presented for each disease.

Part Three includes the cause, clinical signs, prevention, and treatment for diseases that are not commonly associated with a particular system of the animal body. These include generalized infectious diseases, metabolic and deficiency disorders, localized diseases of the skin and extremities, and disorders due to plant and chemical poisoning.

Part Four is devoted to the understanding of parasitology. It covers the internal and the external parasites that are common to livestock. A description, the damage inflicted on the host, symptoms, control procedures, and the recommended treatment are included for each parasite.

|
